Tampere Region’s Situational Picture of Innovation

The process gathers data for nearly 50 indicators from open data sources that have been identified as strategically crucial.

In Tampere Region (Pirkanmaa) innovation is seen as the key to sustainable economic growth, well-being, employment, competitiveness, and prosperity of the region.

Situational Picture of Innovation of Tampere Region offers an in-depth look into regional innovation ecosystem by gathering data and providing trends and by discussing innovation topics that actors in the region are currently focusing on.

The preparatory process is led by the Council of Tampere Region.

The process gathers data for nearly 50 indicators from open data sources that have been identified as strategically crucial. These indicators cover six main themes: impact, business growth, RDI investments, higher education institutions, digitalisation, and internationality.

The metrics are then processed together, and the analysis is supplemented by delving deeper into new openings in innovation, prevailing trends, and regional innovation activities. Here we have summaries of the three of the six themes: digitalisation, RDI investments and internationality.

The work to develop the operating model of Situational Picture of Innovation began in 2013. The annual innovation-themed process is a well-established part of integral networking activities, bringing together Tampere Region experts in regional development, higher education, representation of interest groups, vitality promotion and business to discuss and compile the situational picture for the region. The work further advances the strong cooperation culture in the region.

Situational Picture of Innovation 2021 is already the ninth of its kind, and although the process and contents are constantly being developed together with regional, national, and international partners, the process has established itself as a unique operating model both within the Council of Tampere Region and even at the national level.
